Family Academy Expands: From Philippines to Guatemala

The ICM Family Academy (FA) continues its proven impact as it celebrates the graduation of its first cohort in Cobán, Guatemala. This milestone represents a significant validation of the program’s adaptability and relevance across diverse ultra-poor communities globally.

These 72 children from five different ultra-poor communities now have a critical head start in math and phonics—foundational skills essential for educational success. Equally important, the program has empowered 76 parents who now have the confidence to teach their own children and have developed a deeper appreciation for education.

“We are overjoyed to celebrate the first Family Academy graduation in Cobán, Guatemala,” Director of Education Ercile A. Trespuentes shared. “The success in Guatemala is testament to the program’s relevance and adaptability to any ultra-poor community.”

This expansion follows Family Academy’s proven success in the Philippines, where detailed metrics have demonstrated significant improvements in children’s cognitive development and academic readiness. The program’s growth comes as research continues to identify early childhood education as one of the most cost-effective interventions for breaking the cycle of poverty.
