Christmas Eve is fast approaching, and this special occasion marks a more exciting celebration for Gemma. She is celebrating the holiday in her newly built dream home. And for her, this house isn’t just a structure; it’s a symbol of hope, resilience, and the transformative power of community support.

Gemma’s journey began in the challenging circumstances of ultra-poverty. Life was difficult, with her family living in a makeshift house with a dirt floor. Unsafe and weak, the walls would let the rain in.
But everything began to change when Gemma joined International Care Ministries’ (ICM) four-month Transform Program. She attended lessons on financial literacy, health, and values through the program. She eventually joined a savings group, where she began saving just $0.17 (P10) per week.
“I’m happy that we built a nice house thanks to our savings group, and we will receive our share this coming December. I have saved (P6,000), but I’m not sure how much my income from that will be. I plan to use it to purchase some materials for the house, make some extensions, and buy food for our Noche Buena,” Gemma explains.
After two years, she was able to secure a total of $600 (P33,000) in loans to construct a two-bedroom home. This is her dream home – a sturdy structure that now stands proudly beside her old makeshift house.
Gemma is one of the 141,791 members of ICM’s Prevail savings groups, which are part of ICM’s livelihood strategy under the Transform Program. This four-month training is offered in partnership with local churches in communities to help families escape ultra-poverty. Currently, in ICM’s 4,380 active Savings Groups members are managing a total savings contributions of $6,697,720 (or P391 million) as of January 2025!

“Before, our old house didn’t have a door or a lock. We felt a little afraid at night. But now, in our new home, we can sleep peacefully and comfortably, knowing we feel safe,” Gemma shares.
“We are excited to spend our first Christmas in our new home.” She plans to use profits from her savings group business to prepare a special Christmas meal for her family—a meal that will be shared in a place she can finally build a better life from!
As Gemma decorates her home and prepares for the festivities, she is reminded of how far she’s come. Her story is a beacon of inspiration for others, showing that even the smallest steps of saving a few cents every week can lead to life-changing transformation.
